MHTL Concludes, Top 3 Teams Heading to SEA Team League!

For some, 31st October 2015 and 1st November 2015 was the beginning of the first weekend of the BlizzCon World Championship 2015. For others, it was the 4th Qualifier weekend of the Dew Challenge Hearthstone Malaysia tournament. But for 12 teams, it was the weekend of the Malaysia Hearthstone Team League, organized by Jason “Hamtaro” Lim, Adam “Devilzish” Wong and Nicholas “Nickimaru” Yong.

This two-day single-elimination tournament was a Malaysian Qualifier event, where the top 3 Malaysian teams would then head on to the South-East Asia (SEA) Team League and face other national teams from Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. The tournament format followed the Archon Team League Championship (ATLC) event, where each team is made of 3 members, and each member brings two classes each. Each team is required to have 6 unique classes, therefore multiple classes are not allowed. Matches are best-of-11 conquest format, and the first team to win 6 games (i.e. lock out all their decks), wins their match.

Following the ATLC rules, the bench rule was also applied to the MHTL tournament. The bench rule states that when a team member loses 2 games in a row, that team member is locked out of the match. That team member can only be “unbenched” when a fellow team member wins a game, or if the remaining team members have their classes/decks locked out.

Both tournament days proved to be quite exciting, with some matches going all the way to the 11th and final game. While some players brought decks that were popular in the current competitive meta, there were definitely some interesting and surprising card choices from other players (e.g. a Faceless Manipulator copying Mal’Ganis, a Stampeding Kodo being brought in to handle low attack minions, as well as the revival of the Patron Warrior). Overall, the competitive level from each player was definitely high, with everyone turning into Ropecoach during their turns. Some of these exciting matches can be viewed on my YouTube channel (link is available on the right side of the page, under ‘Social Links’) once YouTube has finished processing them. Edit: Day 1 and Day 2 videos are now available!
